Helen on Retreat at Soma Cabin, Lake Cushman, Olympic Forest, WA

Howdy from Soma Ranch!

Have you enjoyed this week’s Full Moon? We have been mesmerized here at Soma Ranch. Also a reminder that the last time I posted a newsletter update was a month ago!

My trip to our Soma Cabin retreat was very special with daily yoga, meditation, walks, hikes and run. I felt a wonderful reset and am inspired to share this place and wonderful activities with others. Watch this space (I hope to share more next time…). For now check out a slide show below that shares photos that tell stories well. Lake Cushman and the Olympic National Forest and Park are truly magical.

Susannah Roland was a lovely regular attendee at our monthly cuppas at Soma, she met Helen soon after she moved to the area around 2009. They’ve been friends ever since.

Sad to share Susannah Roland died peacefully in her reading chair earlier in October. She is missed.

Thank you to monthly cuppa attendess for your support, connection and the wonderful words you shared about Susannah.

R.I.P. Susannah Roland

With deep sadness I share that Susannah Rohland has moved to her beyond the beyond...

I am comforted imagining Susannah cozily surrounded by her beloved books, dancing with angels, free of pain and all things that can weigh us down.. Her effervescant personality, elequent sharings, pleasant chuckles, regular attendance and dear kindness will be remembered.

I met Susannah within a couple of weeks of buying Soma Ranch (back in 2009). We were both relatively new to the area and have enjoyed a very special kindred spirited friendship over the years. Though recently Susannah had put a pause on coming to dance, she was the most regular attendee of our monthly cuppa get togethers. Her regular, consistent, presence and contributions will be greatly missed.

Thank you Monthly Cuppas for St Jude

Our monthly “Community Cuppa” was a wonderful time for connection, conversation and support.

Dear Peggy, Diana, Kay, Cindy, Cece, Sabrina and Chris

Thank you for coming to Cuppa yesterday, your presence and share was deeply appreciated

We raised $35 for St Jude.

Thank you for the delicious two cakes that were brought to our experience.

Thank you Emily Shearer who was with us in thoughts and prayers. She left a sweet voicemail, I'm happy to share with you next time you come to class.

I hope you like the precious photos included here. Holding space for Susannah's chairm and sharing special things in her memory, was especially touching.

FYI I'm sharing photos, some information about our cuppa times and how Susannah attended every month with her brother, Michael. He, his family and some close friends shared joy seeing Susannah so happy and incredibly connected with an awesome group of women. We have fond memories and moments with her, that is for sure!!

love and gratitude

Pick a Number Class

This morning Natasha (one of our Rock Star Soma Teachers) created a new “Pick a Number” class concept. She had been working with the latest Nia Routine, Alchemy, learning the choreography and developing the main movement patterns.

Here’s

  1. more inform about Natasha’s process

  2. a complimentary 24HR replay

  3. a sneak peak into “feedback/chat” after class with Helen & Natasha.

Natasha created a playlist with several fabulous songs for each of the movement pattern she had learned from “Alchemy”.

In our 30 day challenge program we enjoy bringing play, improvisation and community feels to our Friday classes. Today’s Fun Friday 30 minute class was no exceptions… Before class, we were asked to pick a number, this then determined which tune made the final cut. Natasha managed a beautiful balance between freedom and form, where she had a structure with regards which songs would match which moves, however she let go of the control of choosing which song would be selected. The process, concept and class were so cool we want to share it with you (compliementary). Simply click the link below and enjoy (FYI this link is time sensitive and expires in 24 hours.

Here’s how we send out our daily 24HR replays via email after the LIVE class experience:

Tribute to Whitney Houston

This coming Saturday (October 19, 2024) 10am central I will be revisiting a movement experience I created back in 2012 (when Whitney Houston died). The moves are adapted from a Nia Routine called Birth. Class is available ONLINE and via 24HR Replay. Usual class rates apply.

Here’s some mini clips of the movements (recorded back in 2020 before Soma Ranch had the pavilion!), information about the playlist and more.

After listening/researching many Whitney Houston Albums I found all the tracks for this play list from Whitney - The Greatest Hits
Other than “who do you love” from my very first Nia routine “Commitments”

The Nia choreography from the recent Nia routine “Birth” lends itself very well to this music. Great upbeat, disco, invigorating tunes.

Let me know if you play with this play list - I’d love to hear how it goes :-)

This is also a super play list for general listening,
I’ve been LOVING driving, singing along to these tunes.
Whitney was a remarkable singer, I adore how her music lives on.

Barndo Beauty Patio Area

Joe and Helen have finished construction on our new addition to the “Barndo Beauty”. This is our most popular AirBNB booking and short term rental return clients. We even have one regular guests who comes for 2 weeks every month to enjoy the Barndo Beauty!

We have created a fun “Protected” outdoor environment where our guests can enjoy being at the ranch, enjoying the outdoors whether it be relaxing shaded from the sun or being protected from the rain. We’ve fondly named it “Brad’s Pad” for now ;-)

Joe added lovely details, like including the stain glass windows that were originally installed in Helen’s bedroom in the UK many moons ago.

Let's give THANKS

We have many Canadians in our 30 day challenge group. Even 2 of our Rock Star teachers, Elaine and Natasha are from Canada!

Check out more fun photos below of these 2 fabulous teachers who have become fast friends.

This Monday, 10/14/24 10am, at Soma Ranch, we are aligning with the Canadian thanksgiving weekend. Helen will lead an experience (in person and ONLINE) to give Thanks and gratitude with the fabulous music by Karen Drucker (FYI this is the music used in the Nia routine “Selfless”)

Helen has adapted the playlist and put moves inspired from a Nia classic called AO into the experience. Here’s some more information about the process of selecting music…

Often great Nia playlists will have a selection of several different artists to provide a balanced landscape of sound from the variety of genres, keys and more. I enjoy how the Karen Drucker playlist is an exception to this rule.

Even though most of her music is “spiritual, faith based and uplifting” based, Karen Drucker provides excellent variations in tempo, style and genre. Karen’s splash of humor, with lines like “I’m am perfect even with wrinkles and cellulite thighs” in the jazzy song “Lighten up” provide surprise and delight to the sonic journey.

With the original playlist, from fellow Trainer Casey Bernstein, being a grand 16 song 1 hour and 11 minutes composition, to create a 60 minute Nia class some tracks needed to be eliminated and the playlist edited. Here’s my process:

Screen Shot 2019-10-22 at 9.37.45 AM.png
  1. eliminate some songs (I play with 3 strikes you’re out!) - after listening/dancing/playing with Trigger 3 times I choose to take it out. AND I hear from fellow Nia teachers some find this to be their favorite.

  2. identify strong YES! songs (Breath, Thank you, Lighten Up, Power of Women)

  3. mix up the playlist several classes in a row identify the “clicks” (Gifts, Healed, Blessing)

  4. leave the ones who didn’t make the “A list”, play them at them before and after classes (as participants arrive and leave, keep them unclicked yet available for special occasions (“Ho’oponopono” - a visiting Nia Belt’s favorite word, “Dropping Down” when facilitating a Nia Brown Belt training etc.)

Technical NOTES:

Know the length of selected songs within a long playlist:

  • Highlight the tracks within a playlist to get the length of selected songs

Playlist organization:

  • Folders NR = Nia Routine G=Group HT at end for a HT edited list:

Examples of playlist organization:

  1. NR/G/SelflessHT = Nia Routine, Group, Selfless HT version

  2. NR/D/Opal = Nia Routine, Debbie, Opal

  3. NR/C/ZAliveAO = Nia Routine, Carlos, “ZMix” Alive + AO

  4. NR/J/1910Blue = Nia Routine, Jam, Nia Blue Belts October 2019

Soma News

Enjoying the Northern Lights at Soma Ranch.

Howdy from Soma Ranch!

Our heart goes out to those affected by recent hurricanes in near by states. Here in Texas we are experiencing the beautiful “in the pocket” climate between Summer and Winter, the wonderful sweet spot, where we neither need AC nor heat. Nights with the windows up, we enjoy the breeze and fabulous sounds of nature that surround us.

Last night was a first, and most unusual sight, with the opportunity to see the Northern Lights here at Soma Ranch.

Joe and Helen have finished construction on our new addition to the “Barndo Beauty”. This is our most popular AirBNB booking and short term rental return clients. We have created a fun “Protected” outdoor environment where our guests can enjoy being at the ranch, enjoying the outdoors whether it be relaxing shaded from the sun or being protected from the rain.

Helen is teaching both Saturday Morning classes: The Upper Arm Bone (Humerus) in 5 Stages and Medusa (Annie Lenox) Firm back, Soft front, Wild heart 10am Movement Experience.

This coming Monday 10/13/24 we are aligning with our Canadian participants and teachers to celebrate Thanksgiving. Helen is leading a 10am class IN PERSON, ONLINE and via 24HR replay.

Thank you Monthly Cuppa attendees! we raised $20 and had a grand time. Please note Monthly Cuppa is Monday, November 4.

Hope to dance with you soon,

Medusa Movement

Saturday’s class has a theme of "strong back, soft front, wild heart". (Inspired by the fabulous book by Brene Brown "Braving the Wilderness"). In the 8:45am 5 stages class we explore Humerus, Awareness of the Upper Arm Bone, by paying attention to the sensation, the language of our body. We will particularly explore the sensations of expression of heart through the skin, bones and soft connective tissue of our upper arm bones.

This Nia 5 Stages class is most often is described as a luxurious healing hour of setting the focus for the 10am movement experience that follows.

The 10am class will be “Medusa”, an experience Helen Terry has adapted from the Nia Experience Sanjana. The class has a theme of "strong back, soft front, wild heart". (Inspired by Helen’s 2nd reading of the fabulous book by Brene Brown "Braving the Wilderness").  We will dance "Medusa"set to the music of Annie Lenox with guest appearances from Prince and AC/DC!

Here’s more about the music and the wonderful artist Annie Lenox who created the album Medusa.

Wonderful interview with Annie Lennox who humbly accepts the phrase Maverick. She certainly seems to be a conscious, intelligent and most “unorthodox and independent-minded person".

I love and connect with how Annie Lennox shares her desire to be a “powerful performer, to resonate with people in a certain way, and a sense of who I am and what I want to do”

When you sign up for a class you are automatically sent the Zoom link for class.

The link is the same each week.

an unorthodox or independent-minded person
— Maverick

Here’s a sweet duet with her daughter Lola…

I desire to be a powerful performer,
to resonate with people in a certain way,
with a strong sense of
who I am and
what I want to do.
— Annie Lennox
Listen to Sensation, the language of your body.
— Nia

You are welcome to attend either class.

And, when you’re able to attend both classes, something magic happens! The entire Nia 5 stages class is like a rich 60 minute introduction to the 10am Nia class, a beautiful compliment and super preparation.

In this gentle, self discovering, potentially healing Nia 5 stages experience

  • your body gets to settle into and taste the Nia class focus

  • your mind can learn new and novel information,

  • your heart may open to receive more with fascination up and frustration down

  • your spirit could be tickled and curious to experience more

Awareness teaches us to
notice when we feel better
which is the sensation
of self-healing

Northern Lights shine at Soma

Check out these photos of the Northern “Aurora Borealis” lights seen from Soma Ranch. Last night, for the first time, we saw an amazing display of light and color around 11pm.

The northern lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, are sometimes visible in Texas, though they are rarely seen in South Central Texas with the naked eye.
