5 Sensations

This weekend we are celebrating our month of Sensational Movement with 2 fabulous opportunities with Helen Terry. We'd be thrilled if you'd like to join us ONLINE this Saturday morning.

Our focus is 5 Sensations

FOCUS: Sensations of Movement

INTENT: Love the sensations of your body

ROUTINE: Helen Original "Aria"

MUSIC: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/nr-h-arias/pl.063fcca7064344a5aadf0a99d87b4b9b

TEACHER: Helen

COMMENTS: Sense the endless potential of loving your body and life. The 5 principles of the body's way apply to life as much as they do to the body. Hope you find dynamic ease, balance, mobility, stability and may life itself reveals "life's" way :-)

Nia 5 Stages 8:45am CST with Helen Terry

Part of the learning methodology of Nia 5 stages lessons, to bring a greater holistic fascination when learning about the body, through utilizing different approaches: Look, Listen, Imagine. For example

LOOK

  • Energy Extending out along the bones - Like Laser Beams (Flexibility)

  • Energy starting and stopping, like sparks of electricity (Agility)

  • Energy in constant motion, like water (Mobility)

  • Energy In, muscles packing the bones, like sponges (Strength)

  • Energy equal and opposite, like a rock (Stability)

LISTEN

The Body needs and demands balance between the 5 sensations.

IMAGINE

The 5 Sensations as the five food groups from which you feed your body

  • Flexibility – Imagine your bones growing longer, your joints yawning

  • Agility – Imagine your body as blinking lights or camera flashes

  • Mobility – Imagine your limbs as scarves, water, or snakes

  • Strength – Imagine packing the muscles in closer to the bones

  • Stability – Imagine being at rest, ready for action

Aria Movement with Helen 10am CST

The 5 Sensations are
like the five food groups
from which you feed your body
— Voice of 5 Sensations, Nia 5 Stages

This Saturday be guided through the Nia 5 Stages lesson “5 Sensations” at 8:45am CT.

Congratulations Nia White Belt Graduates at Soma Ranch

Howdy from Soma Ranch!

This week we experienced an “off the charts” amazing Nia White Belt “Art Of Sensation” training retreat at Soma Ranch. Great SOLD OUT retreat with a group of participants who were present, showed up and fully participated. For example “officially” the Nia White Belt is no longer for teachers, instead it’s the foundational course for everyone. Knowing there were some very keen students who had strong intentions to teach, I was able to weave some “Soma Play” sessions. Participants had the option to attend these bonus sessions, or go play independently at Soma Ranch. When I asked the 10 participants “who is interested in the possibility of participating in a jam, where you could each teach a song in a collective community class experience?” Everybody immediately shot their hands up in the air. I was delightfully surprised and almost fell backwards in amazement! And the JAM was phenomenal, with high levels of embodied awareness, relaxation and joy.

Natasha is teaching both Saturday Morning classes: X Ray Anatomy and Sensational Mix

The weather was great. We were extremely thankful to not loose power during the hurricane. Fortunately grocery stores were reopened and sufficiently stocked for us to be able to have the necessary supplies to feed the group! We were able to do several extra curriculum activities including Sunset Boat Ride, Cowboy Church and S’mores! Over the next few week’s we’ll likely share more about this fantastic week.

Joe and Helen are heading out to the Soma Satelite “Cabin” Retreat by Lake Cushman, near Seattle, WA Sunday - Thursday (temperatures in 70’s by day and 50’s at night). We have a fabulous “ranch sitter” and are excited to experiment with this developing theme of living part time in Washington State while someone runs Soma Ranch. Gigi is teaching the 10am Monday and Thursday classes at Soma Ranch and “the team” are coving online classes.

X Ray Anatomy and Art of Perception MIX

Natasha leads both Saturday morning class this week; 8:45am Nia 5 Stages and 10:00am Nia Classic (Central US Time).

Natasha brings a beautiful relaxed presence, with a grounded approach. She is presently still “flowing n glowing” from her recent Nia Brown Belt experience at Soma Ranch. Natasha looks forward to sharing her wisdom about X Ray Anatomy followed by a “MIX” of favorite Tunes from her Soma Brown Belt experience. We hope you can enjoy these Saturday morning “double scoop” experiences.

Focus: X Ray Anatomy

Intent: Felt sense of Dynamic Postural Alignment

When you sign up for a class you are automatically sent the Zoom link for class. The link is the same each week.

With X-Ray Anatomy, we get to look through. The real work
comes in looking at the shapes in a book, on a skeleton or on a
human body, so that you learn what your living structure looks like
and develop a relationship with it
— 5 Stages

You are welcome to attend either class.

And, when you’re able to attend both classes, something magic happens! The entire Nia 5 stages class is like a rich 60 minute introduction to the 10am Nia class, a beautiful compliment and super preparation.

In this gentle, self discovering, potentially healing Nia 5 stages experience

  • your body gets to settle into and taste the Nia class focus

  • your mind can learn new and novel information,

  • your heart may open to receive more with fascination up and frustration down

  • your spirit could be tickled and curious to experience more

We look at anatomy to see how the body or body part is positioned, then we sense it in our own bodies. We can then use not only what we see and what we understand of anatomy, but also what we sense to re-align all parts of our body.

X-Ray Anatomy provides an opportunity to look at The Body’s Way and Your Body’s Way, perceive the difference and adjust your body so that you feel better. Your body is constantly tweaking and adjusting to maintain a Dynamic Postural Alignment

Nia White Belt JAM

EveryBody attending the Nia White Belt at Soma Ranch asked to teach a song in our community class. The JAM was phenomenal, with high levels of embodied awareness, relaxation and joy. And the playlist is fantastic… take a look..

Fabulous Soma Times

We were fortunate with weather, friends and opportunities during our recent Nia White Belt at Soma Ranch. With sunset boat ride, cowboy church option, dining in and out, strolling down Soma lane, plenty of time for dancing in the studio, floating in the pool AND EVERYBODY went in the Plunge Pool!

  • Thank you Mimi for the amazing sunset boat ride on Lake Conroe.

  • Thank you Lone Star Cowboy church for the wonderful option to attend Monday night service.

  • Thank you Joe for the nourishing food and lovely opportunities to connect around the dining table, whether inside or out.

Congratulations Nia White Belts

Congratulations Nia White Belt graduates; Crystal, Georgia, Payton, Jennifer, Pamela, Naomi, Dorit, Laura. Thank you Jayne for coming to retreat all the way from the UK. Thank you Barbara for retreating at Soma and supporting your son. Thank you Megan for flying in from Hawaii, supporting Helen and bringing a very special extra layer to the experience as you shared your heart, wisdom and teaching.

The following photos give “favorite frames” of what happens at Soma Ranch.

A favorite joy to witness is the life long, deep and meaningful friendships that are fostered during an immersive Nia Training retreat at Soma Ranch

  • Celebration photo on the fence at the end of a Nia 7 day training is a precious moment in time, shared with Soma Ranch and Nature in all their glory

  • As a Nia trainer, standing in the center of our circle at graduation I feel incredibly blessed and fortunate to be in the presence of such amazing humans who have been present, kind and vibrant throughout their training

  • Enjoying non alcoholic sparkling cider, witnessing the bubbles, hearing the fizz, giggling out our accomplishments is a sweet part of our graduation traditions.

  • Joe is an artist with food, he provides fun visual yummy surprises at our graduation lunch. Like the Soma Ranch logo cut from a red bell pepper on top of guacamole and the Nia logo stenciled from paprika on top of home made hummus.

  • Thank you Megan, your role as joyful photographer is much appreciated.

  • Something we LOVE about trainings and our adaptable tables in the dining hall, is the ability to all sit around the same table on the last meal. One by one we share favorite frames experienced from the Nia training week together, from life changing to laughable moments, the shares blend together into a beautiful, most touching, closing sharing circle.

  • Dipping in the pool, relaxing in the sauna, submersing in the Cold Plunge, chatting around the table are all opportunities to connect and have a grand time.

  • S’mores were fabulous (so much so no photos were captured!)

  • The Team JAM was especially touching as EVERYBODY got up at taught a song.

  • Public classes were a wonderful way for regular participants to connect with and dance with the Nia White Belt Participants

  • ONLINE classes let folks from all over the world, including Helen’s Mum in England, to join us and get a feel for the fabulous vibes being created on and off the dance floor.

  • The donkeys and horses soon aligned with meal times and creating space, and patiently waited at the fences for attention and CARROTS!

  • Joe’s Mexican Fiesta Night is certainly a highlight with hats, decorations, festive music and more.

Congratulations Nia White Belts. What an honor to share this experience with you at Soma Ranch, for friendships to deepen and opportunities to open.

Dreams come true as we celebrate our 31st Nia White Belt Immersive Retreat here at Soma Ranch. Congratulations Nia White Belts! YOU inspire, support and encourage us to keep on keepin’ on at Soma Ranch.

Now, as we say in Texas “y’all come back and see us soon now, y’ah here!”

and yes, if I had to pick a top favorite frame at Soma it would be this photo taken of our donkey called “Spirit”, captured by Nia White Belt Participant Laura.

Nia White Belt Beginnings

The Nia White Belt has begun beautifully at Soma Ranch. We feel blessed to have power after the hurricane and are delighted the grocery stores reopened and had the resources we need for the retreat. (phew!! it was close!)

Jayne flew in from the UK to enjoy a retreat/review having taken her White, Green, Blue belts with Helen at Tattenhall, UK over 10 years ago!

Payton brought his mother with him. While he attends sessions Barbara enjoys a much deserved retreat and she is enjoying public where she gets to experience Nia for the first time.

The sensation of sensuous is about calm, peace, harmony, flow. Sensuous is the first sensation we feel when we’re born, when we’re held, when we’re brought to the breast, when we’re physically close to another human being –it’s very personal, it’s very safe – it’s has nothing to do with being turned on, or sexuality.

Dynamic Ease in Stability feels like you are “on top of the world”
— Nia 5 Stages

AO - Different Space - Bob Holroyd

Do you sometimes feel like a fish swimming upstream? recently as we’ve begun at looking at what semi retirement may look like, clearing, cleaning, checking finances, doing taxes, catching up in general and “having my moments”. Then life happened!  The recent Nia Brown Belt helped to swirl and inspire me into an upward spiral, in awe of how the flow of life, connection and synchronicity can come together with miraculous ease, for something magical to happen. For me I see this as an ever confirming moment of how there has to be a God! and I surrender, with abundant joy and deep gratitude, to the One with a master plan. All of this has inspired me to lead AO this Saturday. A firm favorite with a fun story.

Fun story…. Almost a decade ago, when planning a special event with an amazing Nia Teacher, Jo Turner, she shared “there’s a musician I know called Bob Holroyd, he's a friend of mine and I was wondering if we could invite Bob to see Nia to his music".  I LEAPED out of my seat, "Ha! there's a classic Nia routine (one of my favorites) called AO, originally created by Nia Co Founder, Carlos Aya Rosas. The entire playlist comes from "Different Space", an album by none other than… Bob Holroyd!!”

And so it was - I lead a movement experience with about 35 Nia dancers, to the music of Bob Holroyd and he participated with us! Some folks brought drums and instruments to join in the fun and the whole “event” turned out to be a most remarkable Nia class experience which came about with the most amazing ease. I felt like a happy salmon swimming along with the flow of the river, thoroughly enjoying the ride.

My parents attended, and got to witness me teaching (which often brings my lovely Mum to tears) and I felt honored how they chose to join in the dance. Beyond my wildest dreams I met Bob and had the opportunity to share how his music inspires me, and so many folks around the world, who love to dance to his amazing artistry. One of my favorite moments was, while many ladies were enthusiastically chatting about their experience, having a private moment, hanging out having a very “geeky” conversation, with Bob Holroyd, about how his music, matched the moves and more…

Listen to the music here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ezv-lKQKQN8

For more information about Bob Holroyd visit  http://www.bobholroyd.com

Entertain joining us for class via ZOOM or request 24HR replay.

A Different Space was Bob's third album, and the first on the US Six Degrees label. Released to critical acclaim it featured the cult classic African Drug. Previously remixed by pioneering DJs Coldcut, this version is actually Bob's own remix of the original track, which first appeared on Fluidity & Structure. Since the release of A Different Space, Bob's music has seen a surge of licencing which has seen tracks from the album appearing on at least 50 compilations including Ministry of Sounds Pure Global Chillout, Francois K's The Essential Mix, Coldcut'sJourneys by DJsBuddha Beats, and Claude Challe 's Sun. The track The Sheer Weight of Memory also appears in the Wayne Wang film The Centre of the World.

2 for 1: Sade "Lovers Rock" to Nia Routine AO

Fondly called “Flounce” this routine begins and ends with the same song. A fun way to deliver the promise. Notice how you feel in the song at the beginning of the routine, then notice how you feel at the end with the same song. In Nia we define Self Healing as any thing that feels better. If you notice anything feels better, recognize this as self healing and give body gratitude.

Focus: At the beginning of class I introduce the concept flow and bounce, how the body thrives on the dynamic ease. We physically get a sense of shifting our connective tissue by softly moving arms in the circle. We Step In with a question. Choose to step in with what will serve you best for class: flow or bounce.

Cycle 3 Warm Up: In the first song we play with rhythm and flow through the 13 joints, starting with one side, then the other, the whole body. The next few songs follow the choreography to AO, sometimes tight sometimes loose. In Slave Song, the peak of Cycle 4* Get Moving*, I play with the concept of bouncing a ball like playing basketball and acting as if we have high level skills :-). The songs progressively move into flounce (a combinations of flowing and bouncing). Lovers Rock is my favorite song, rich words, music and something magical comes through from flow, bounce and flow. My favorite song for choreography is Immigrant: simple bounce, flow and flounce moves that work forwards, back, lateral and diagonal travel in directions.

At the end of class we often Step Out with a 2 question quiz:

1. what do you choose to step out with to serve you in your day best, flow or bounce?

2. what do you choose to step out with to serve you well if you can choose flow, bounce OR flounce.
