She’s completed a Nia Art of Sensation Nia White Belt Retreat training with Geri Timmins in the beautiful Cotswold Countryside. Congratulations Geri on your “first voyage” as a Nia Trainer, this was a spectacular week with wonderful reconnections and new beginnings.

Saturday Morning Spine with Erin

Saturday 3/30/24 Erin Curren is teaching both the 8:45am Nia 5 Stages class and the 10:00am class.

Continuing our March Challenge of Variety. We will focus on the Spine in 5 stages then take this focus into the 10am class with Yoj! (Joy backwards LOL)

Nia 5 STAGES

Focus: Self Healing the Spine

Intent to keep energy flowing between the Cranium and Sacrum to stimulate mobility of the spine physically and energetically.  

10am Class: Yoj

Focus: Felt-sense of fitness (sometimes called FAMSSS)

Intent: Start within, sensing the movement as "an inside job"

Nia strikes me as a fitness practice that in some ways turns a typical dance class on its head. How often do you see a dance class represented as emphasizing the timing, the most important thing being that everyone is doing the exact same thing at the exact same time, performing for show? Nia changes the script and declares "we're less about what the movement looks like and more about what the movement feels like."  To this end we are turning the playlist on its head, starting from the end, inverting the order of songs, just like Nia asks us to start on the inside, not with what it looks like on the outside. 

Notice how beginning at the end of this well-loved body of work, Joy, which we've danced in many incarnations this month of variety, is bringing a familiar-yet-new sense to your dance. Enjoy the playful ways we can flip the playlist and the moves and, like a palindrome, create a mirrored movement experience that still includes all 7 cycles.

Super Hybrid Monday 10am Class

This Monday, Soma Rock Star teacher, Natasha Villeneuve, will be leading a “super hybrid” class. Local participants from the Montgomery area will be attending class in person at Soma Ranch as usual, yet what will be different for them is Natasha will be teaching from the big screen, through our awesome sound system, streaming live from Ottawa Canada.

Participants accustomed to taking class ONLINE via zoom will attend in many ways as “life as usual”, other than one square in the zoom room will be filled with the participants at Soma Ranch, facing the camera, taking class from Natasha.

Kudos to Natasha for helping us figure out the “spaghetti” of all the wires necessary to make this experience possible, and big gratitude from Helen who is co-leading an Art of Sensation, Nia White Belt retreat in the Cotswolds, UK.

"Discover Your Inner Magic" Women's Wellness Retreat

Howdy! We hope you’re enjoying life as fully and vibrantly as we are at the moment. Joe and I (Helen) are on the tail of a fabulous retreat lead by Sara Shouhayib. A wonderful opportunity to share the joys of Soma Ranch with 15 beautiful remarkable women. This diverse group of women of various ages, backgrounds, experiences, and fitness levels, all converged to catalyze profound personal growth and transformation. Among the attendees were courageous souls who boldly ventured solo into this unknown space, as well as lifelong friends and relatives who deepened their bonds through exploration and participation in novel activities such as boating and horse riding.

Each participant was treated to a complimentary massage, setting the tone for relaxation, enjoyment, and profound healing. As the days progressed (with daily meditation, yoga, Nia dance, a sound healing bath with chakra crystal bowls and human design workshops) guests reveled in the activities, fostering connections with one another and themselves, culminating in a transformative and rejuvenating experience for every individual at the retreat.

We are left feeling complete, blessed and most fortunate. Experiences like this are exactly what we visioned when co-creating Soma Ranch. To witness dreams coming true for both us, the retreat leaders and all the attending guests, was a dream come true.

Congratulations Sara for creating your first SOLD OUT special retreat here at Soma Ranch.

Joe and Helen are enjoying hosting our first retreat of 2024. With 15 full time guests staying at Soma Ranch from Thursday through Monday, we are having a blast. This is a “TRUE TEXAS” retreat experience with hikes in the Sam Houston National Forrest, boating on Lake Conroe and Horse Trail Riding at the Local Banshee Ranch.

Sara (the host) dreamed of creating retreats after her life changing retreat experience in Bali. “I simply wanted to bring transformative experiences to women right here in Texas”. Guests flew in from Detroit, Mexico, Dubai, Troy Michigan, as well as driving over from the Dallas area, Houston.

The retreat is called “Discover Your Inner Magic Women’s Retreat”.

Helen will be providing a Nia class and a sound bath experience, other teachers are providing meditation, yoga and human design coaching.

Joe and Helen are enjoying hosting our first Nia training of 2024, the Green Belt. Unfortunately several folks dropped out, fortunately we kept going and are thoroughly enjoying a memorable experience for the 2 trainees, 1 repeater and 2 new guests here at Soma Ranch.

Enjoying special times and wonderful groups like this reminds us of our why and the roots from which we “birthed” the concept of Soma Ranch.

To witness the deep growth, wonderful joy, beautiful shares and fabulous laughs as we navigate the Nia course and the Soma retreat, is a gift.

The weather at Soma is beautiful, this sweet photo of Nia (our oldest donkey) is a super example of the “vibe” around here at the moment.

Right Fit By Accident

We had an AWSM time in our Fun Friday "Blue Monkey" this morning. The community brought some great song requests We're focusing on Variety this month and we certainly got it!. Then, as we stepped in I clicked "shuffle" and stepped into the unknown ;-)

Selecting a simple focus and intent certainly helps ground an experience like this, and today's selection worked:

Focus: Circle and Lines

Intent: Develop a felt sense of horizontal, vertical and rotational movement

We're nearing the end of a Nia Green Belt training, where we have been predominantly focusing on the music, movement and magic of the Nia Routine Bloom. I was on a quest to help the trainees by exploring if the choreography of Bloom could be the base of moves I chose in this improvisational experience. The good news is the "Gods", the shuffle, the songs requested all cooperated beyond expectation and song for song we were able to sustain some strong (tight) clicks with the original choreography of Bloom whilst playfully honoring the integrity with the new songs as we intimately danced to the music.

Like life, sometimes a Nia exploration beautifully unfolds with minimal effort, maximum ease, where things seem to align wonderfully as "if by accident". We experienced a cascading roll of several moments, from one gem to the next, that unfolded like (a phrase i love from Nia) the "right fit by accident".

March Guest Teacher Feature

Each month we enjoy the opportunity to feature a teacher within our community. This month, March, we are featuring Colleen Vandeven.

Blue Belt and Free dance certified, and an Ageless Grace educator, Colleen has been teaching mainly from her home “studio" in Brantford, Ontario,Canada.

Soon, Colleen will take a hiatus. For now we get to enjoy her sweet spirit and wonderful teaching in this Special Sunday Teacher Feature experience.

There is a wonderment available in life which connects me to both the joys and sorrows of being human. I have been practicing the Nia technique for many years.It defines a healing way and has been a joy to impart as well. For me it encompasses true fitness and I love sharing movement whilst at the front of an actual class or Zoom monitor;

Each year we provide all 52 NIa 5 stages lessons. One every Saturday at 8:45am). Here’s the schedule for class for all of 2024.

The Five Stages Training takes a focused look at Nia’s integrative movement practice based on 5 developmental stages of the human experience, from embryonic to walking. Monthly Cuppa for St Jude

Our monthly “Community Cuppa” is a super time to visit Soma Ranch. Please join us for this lovely local community get together, on March 11 (it’s usually on the first Monday of the month) at 11am after class. This event is a fundraiser for our ““Soma Charity Partner”. All donations collected go towards St. Jude, We will be celebrating how Helen ran the 13.1 mile distance and how we crossed the finish line together, exceeding our annual goal to raise a minimum of $5000 each year. Let’s see what Grand Total we can submit by March 15, 2024.

Enjoy Coffee or Tea, Health snacks, Fabulous conversation, and Great Company. This month we’ll be celebrating the grand finale of our annual fundraiser.

March is our 30 day movement challenge of VARIETY. We have chosen to play with featuring the Nia Experience Joy. We are on a quest to provide many different ways we, as a team, can share this body of work.

Soma News

Helen succeeds her annual goal of Vegas 1/2 marathon, and as a community we have raised $5000+ for St Jude

Howdy!

Joe and Helen are back from an epic trip to Las Vegas:

  1. Our first road trip in an electric car, fulfilling our desire to be more conscious of our footprint on the planet. (And when at home, with the Soma Studio covered with Solar Panels, we are 95% powered by Solar :-))

  2. also celebrating Helen who ran the Rock N Roll 1/2 marathon as a “St jude Hero”, part of our Soma Annual Soma Fundraiser. We’ve raised $7067 so far… exceeding our annual goal to raise $5000. Huge gratitude for all who have donated, together we crossed the finish line and the time line to donate is still open if you’d like to contribute.

Thank you to our incredible team of teachers who lead all the classes, sharing their wisdom, talent and big hearts while Helen was out of town.

Now’s a perfect time to jump into our 30 day movement VARIETY challenge. We had a laugh creating a mini share about what’s coming up for March, hope you can join us.
